The Pomodoro Technique — Actually Explained

text bag

The Method

25 minutes of focused work on a single task — no multitasking, no "quick" checks

5 minute break: stand up, stretch, refill water — do NOT check your phone

Every 4 pomodoros, take a longer 15-30 minute break to recharge fully

What Most People Get Wrong

Don't switch tasks mid-pomodoro — if something pops up, write it down and continue

Track interruptions: internal (your own urges) vs external (someone asking you something)

If something takes less than 2 minutes, just do it before starting the next pomodoro

Not every task suits pomodoros — creative flow states should not be interrupted artificially

Tools

A physical kitchen timer beats every app — the mechanical wind creates commitment

Simple tally sheet on paper: one mark per completed pomodoro, aim for 8-12 per day

End-of-day review: how many completed vs interrupted? Trend matters more than single days
